Setting up a Value Structure

I began planning the demo for this lesson with the intention that my topic would be water reflections. However, as I developed the thumbnail and block-in, I realized that this would be an ideal landscape subject to focus on setting up a strong value structure, which tends to be a common problem area for many artists. So if you’re also interested in painting water, you get a “two-for-one” deal on this lesson!

About This Lesson

In this lesson, I’ll show and explain how to go about setting up that initial value structure, thinking in terms of “value masses,” which will help convey depth and distance in your landscapes, as well as help you edit your subject matter and create a strong composition.

How it Works

Painting the Poetic Landscape monthly lessons give you a unique opportunity to study (virtually) with Barbara Jaenicke. Purchase access to the lesson and you will be provided with a downloadable PDF with a lesson written by Barbara.

After completing the exercise you can upload your painting and within 10 days (often less!) you’ll receive a personalized review of your painting from Barbara.
